This paper covers a brief history of Tibet. It starts around 600 CE when Tibet was united as as an empire. The empire would grow in stature to the point where it could compete with other countries including the Tang Dynasty. The empire, like many others, would eventually crumble. Several hundred years later, with the help of the Mongols, Tibet would regroup to form a united country. However this time it would be led by its spiritual leader the Dalai Lama. By the early 1700s, the Qing Dynasty would come into Tibet and take on an administrative role over the country, yet it continued to let the Dalai Lama rule. When the Chinese Nationalists overthrew the Qing in 1912, Tibet declared independence and continued as such until 1951 when the People's Republic of China regained control over it. China still allowed Tibet to have significant autonomy until a rebellion took place in there in 1959. After China put down the rebellion, the Dalai-Lama and the ruling government fled in exile to India where they continue to rule today.
