The Tang Dynasty period is considered a golden age of China. It was a time when China was the most prosperous country in the world. The dynasty had established an extensive trade system, both over land via the Silk Road, as well as a maritime trade that extended as far as the Persian Gulf. There was also lots of immigration into China. In Chang'an, the capital, foreigners were integrated into society, and some even served the imperial court and as captains in the army. Chang’an was the largest city in the world with a population of 2 million. The city of Yangzhou, along the Grand Canal, was considered the hub of economic activity. Religion is free, and peace during its peak is somehow maintained. Several technologies were invented such as gunpowder and the mechanical clock. Woodblock printing “became widespread” and improved literacy rates. A more refined ceramic called porcelain is invented. The dynasty kept for the most part the central management structure of the previous Sui dynasty, but tweaked it to near perfection.
